Virtual Worlds and Social Networking

By: Mereya Kaluk

Virtual Worlds and Social Networking took the Internet by storm. Both of the applications are popular and commonly used by the Millennials (people born between 1982 and 2000) today.

Since it is so widely used, it will only be weird if someone does not participate in social networking and virtual worlds.  According to Papp (n. d), a virtual world is an interactive stimulated environment that allows multiple users to participate simultaneously via an online interface. It allows many people to participate in the virtual world simultaneously by using graphical user interface to depict a 2D or 3D visual space. In other words, it allows the formation of social groups such as housemates, clubs and neighborhoods.

Virtual Worlds

Virtual Worlds target every population regardless of their background and ages. For children the virtual worlds that target them are Disney’s Toontown and Pirates of the Carribean (Papp, n. d). Meanwhile for teens, the examples of virtual worlds are Second Life for Teens and Whyville. Besides that, there are also virtual worlds geared toward adults. For instance, the types of virtual worlds for adults are World of Warcraft, Second Life and The Sims Online.

According to Papp (n. d), Second Life is a three-dimensional virtual world designed in 2003 by Linden Labs company in Sans Francisco. In virtual worlds, people can create their avatar which is a computer user’s self -representation or alter ego. It can be realistic to their identity or robot, animals and other creatures. The use of virtual world is gaining more and more attention because the Avatar created can even ride in vehicles, boats and airplanes as they explore their virtual world.

Social Networking

Social Networking sites are similar to virtual world even though there are certain differences between the two. The types of social networking are MySpace and Facebook. What makes social networking and virtual world different is that in social networking, the users not need to create an Avatar. The closest example to virtual world is Facebook as it offers online game such as Farmville, Happy Aquarium and Cafeworld.

By connecting to these games, users can see how each other progress in the games. Although social networking sites do not allow users to create Avatar, they can recruit players within their networking friends to fight against other players.
